Einstein - やってみた
とりあえず実際にやってみなくては気の済まない Club Newton です。Einstein動かしてみました。ROMイメージさえ吸い上げればインストールは簡単。800MHzのiMacG4 RAM512MBでお試し。
NewtonといえばAssistということでNotesに「lunch with bob today」を書き込んでAssistボタンを押してみます。当たり前だけど、ちゃんとミーティングをセッティングしてDatesに追加してくれました。PDAのAはアシスタントのAですからね。
ついでにバックライトも点けてみました。それっぽくなってます。ウチのMP2000は、こんなに明るくないけどね（笑）。
体感的にはMessagePad130ぐらいのレスポンスかな。
ボリュームの調整が効いてないので、Mac側で音量調整する必要があります。起動音やタップ音も忠実に再現されていますよ。スクラブの時の「ボワッ」という音やExtrasドロワが開く音は、とぎれとぎれになってしまいます。Macのマシンスペックを上げれば、スムースになるのかもしれません。作者のPaulはPowerBookG4の1GHzを使っているそうです。
現時点ではアプレットがインストールできないのでNewtonの基本機能で遊んでいる程度ですが、いやはや、見事にNewtonです。でもマウスではさすがに文字入力は大変です。安いタブレットでも購入したいところですねぇ。

けっこうマシンパワー使うんですね。。
今、LinuxザウルスでUNIX代替OSを動かすプロジェクトが進行中で
これとアインシュタインを組み合わせたら動くようになるのでは、なんて思ってましたが
スペックが足りないから無理か。残念！

MPU のエミュレーションや X11 のオーバーヘッドがあるのでしょう。
もし LinuxザウルスのUNIX代替OSというのが ARM のビックエンディアンモードで動作できれば MPU のエミュレーションは必要なくなるし、X11 ではなく Linux のフレームバッファデバイス(/dev/fb0)で描画できれば理論的にはかなり速度が出せると思う。
LinuxザウルスのUNIX代替OSプロジェクトのほうに ARM のビックエンディアンモードもサポートして欲しいとリクエストしておいたほうがいいかも。

X11 のオーバーヘッドが重要ではないと思う。
ザウルスのCPU(MPU?)はビックエンディアンモードではなくてもJITを使ってリトルエンディアンへコンパイルできるようになる。ARMのCPUを持ってないPDAにもJITができる。
Einsteinエミュレーターは遅いのはJITをまだ使わないからだ。すごく遅いではないのはスレッドエミュレーションを使うからだ。

今、UNIX互換OSをリナザウで動かせるプロジェクト
が進行中なのですが、Newtonの代替えプラットフォームに
Linuxザウルスが使えたらどんなに素晴らしいでしょうか。
今後の開発、大いに期待しています！
